Soybean Growers

Below is an email from Halifax County Extension Agent Chris Brown.

Soybean growers,

See the link below for one of Dr. Holshouser’s articles on phomopsis seed decay, sprouting, and other issues associated with a wet late season and maturing soybeans.  Note that phomopsis will result in shriveled or oblong seed with a white chalky coating.  There seems to be a considerable amount of this in the county after the recent rains.  Dr. Holshouser advised to try and harvest what you can if you see early signs of phomopsis in efforts to save as much as possible.  As for what this will amount to in drying costs, docking, etc…. I cannot determine.  If seed had dried down to 20% moisture prior to these rains then reached at least 50% moisture, then germination and sprouting is likely to occur.  If you need assistance, please call me at 434-222-8379 and I'd be glad to come out as well as send samples to the lab.
